Ford has officially announced they will be producing a Ford Fusion hybrid for the 2010 model year. See also: Ford Fusion Hybrid Forum
The new 2010 hybrid Fusion is chock full of great technological wonders rarely seen in a family sedan. The air conditioning is run off an electric motor rather than being belt-driven like in a typical car. They hybrid Fusion has regenerative braking that captures some of the energy used when braking and uses that to charge the car's hybrid batteries. The car uses a CVT (continuously variable) transmission, this is something Ford has used before (in the Five Hundred & Freestyle) but is not widely used on any other Ford products. The CVT provides excellent fuel savings throughout the engine's RPM.
Jalopnik got the chance to drive the new Fusion Hybrid and wrote ".... It’s all these factors together that make the Fusion Hybrid a solid choice in this sector. It asks you to make no sacrifices in the pursuit of excellent fuel economy, while providing you with the tools to both maximize your own efficiency and enjoy driving".
Car and Driver writes "We are going to have to get used to hybrids, because there’s no way automakers will be able to reach future CAFE mileage standards without them. And the great thing about the Fusion is that it functions just like a regular car while delivering terrific gas mileage. The EPA rates the Fusion hybrid at a very impressive 41 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, and Ford says the car can travel as far as 700 miles between fill ups. Over a 300-mile test loop, we averaged 34 mpg—3 mpg better than we did with a Toyota Camry hybrid—with 36.9 mpg in the city and 32.7 mpg on the highway.... Long term, however, these cars are the future, both because of future CAFE standards and because the feds will increasingly encourage us to think green and attempt to reduce our reliance on foreign oil. In the meantime, know that you won’t have to rely on a foreign company to provide the best mid-size hybrid sedan".
Ford has stated: "The all-new Ford Fusion Hybrid is now officially America’s most fuel efficient mid-size car with a certified 41 mpg rating in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, topping the Toyota Camry hybrid by 8 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway".
